Habit Appliances

Tongue thrusting, and thumb sucking are the most common oral habits that interfere with proper eruption of the teeth and development of the bite. If the habit is left untreated, it can produce deleterious dental effects such as open bites, dental protrusion, and crossbite.  Dr. Parsons will design a custom habit breaker appliance to assist patients who have unsuccessfully tried to stop their habit and need a little extra help to finally quit.

Bruxism, or teeth grinding is another common harmful habit that can cause premature tooth wear, temperomandibular joint problems, jaw pain and  headaches. A custom and affordable night guard made by Dr. Parsons will protect your teeth from these harmful effects!!!

FAQs

What are habit appliances?

Habit appliances are orthodontic devices used to prevent harmful oral habits such as thumb sucking, tongue thrusting, and lip biting. These habits can cause dental issues if not corrected early.

How do habit appliances work?

Habit appliances work by creating physical barriers or reminding children not to perform the harmful habits. They are custom-fitted to the patient's mouth and gently guide the development of proper oral habits.

How long does treatment with habit appliances take?

The duration of treatment with habit appliances varies depending on the severity of the habit and the patient's response to the appliance. On average, treatment can last from a few months to a year. Dr. Parsons will provide an estimated timeline during your consultation.

How much do habit appliances cost?

The cost of habit appliances varies depending on the complexity of the treatment. During your consultation, we will provide a detailed cost estimate and discuss payment options. We accept most major insurance plans and offer flexible payment plans to make treatment affordable.

Will a habit appliance affect my child's speech?

There may be a slight lisp or change in speech when your child first starts wearing a habit appliance. However, this usually subsides within a few days as they become accustomed to the appliance.

Are habit appliances uncomfortable?

While there may be an adjustment period when first wearing a habit appliance, most patients find them to be relatively comfortable. Any initial discomfort typically subsides as the patient gets used to the appliance.
