Functional Appliances Treatment in West Palm Beach

These appliances might be recommended for patients when a discrepancy may exist between the upper and lower jaws. The upper jaw may be too far ahead or too far behind. Similarly, the lower jaw can be too far ahead or behind. These appliances are designed to gently and gradually enhance growth in the desired direction and create a more harmonious relationship between the upper and lower jaws. Sometimes these appliances are combined with a palatal expander and braces.

FAQs

What are functional appliances?

Functional appliances are orthodontic devices used to correct jaw discrepancies and improve bite alignment. They work by influencing the growth and positioning of the jaw to achieve a more balanced and functional bite.

How do functional appliances work?

Functional appliances apply gentle, continuous pressure to the jaw, encouraging it to grow and move into a more optimal position. This helps correct overbites, underbites, and other jaw alignment issues.

What types of functional appliances are available?

There are various types of functional appliances, including removable and fixed devices. The specific type of appliance recommended will depend on your individual needs and treatment goals. Dr. Parsons will discuss the best option for you during your consultation.

How do I know if I need a functional appliance?

During your consultation, Dr. Parsons will perform a comprehensive examination and discuss your orthodontic needs. If a functional appliance is deemed the best treatment option for correcting your jaw alignment, Dr. Parsons will create a personalized treatment plan for you.

Can I eat and drink normally with a functional appliance?

While wearing a functional appliance, you should avoid sticky, hard, and chewy foods that can damage the device. It’s also important to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing regularly to keep your teeth and appliance clean.

Are functional appliances uncomfortable?

While there may be an adjustment period when first wearing a functional appliance, most patients find them to be relatively comfortable. Any initial discomfort typically subsides as you get used to the appliance.

While attending an appt with my son recently (who was being seen for an adjustment), I asked Dr. Parsons if she would look at an issue that I had with a permanent retainer. I explained to her that the orthodontist that put it in was located in Maryland and that I was unable to get there to have it looked at. Dr. Parsons took care of me (even though I was a walk in/had no appt). And after she was done, when I asked her what the charge was, she told me not to worry about it! Her generosity of time and service saved me time, money, and travel. I have been very pleased with the service my son has received from her (and her staff) as well!
